Greg's Nitrogen-Fixing Native Plants
Although our atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, this crucial element is not available to living things unless “fixed” in the soil. Not all plants can accomplish this, but those in the Fabaceae (Leguminosae), the bean or pea family, are especially valuable for this process and easily make up the majority able to function this way. Nitrogen “fixing” is a symbiotic process using special bacteria, most often Rhizobia. The “fixing” process is essential to ALL life on Earth, allowing both birth and growth for every plant and thereby their life energy to be passed on to animal life.
