A vigorous large shrub or small tree, with upright habit and unusual peeling bark. Distinct three-veined leaves retained into early winter. Blooms in late summer or fall with small, fragrant white or pink flowers in whorls at the ends of the shoot. Showy calyx enlarges turning bright red in fall. Protect from afternoon sun.
