Large, deciduous, needle bearing conifer with reddish exfoliating bark and horizontal spreading branches. Cone shaped tree. Gray- or blue-green needles, little more than an inch long, are soft and pliable, turning golden yellow in fall before they drop. Cones are about an inch long, egg-shaped at first, then opening at maturity to form rosettes with woody scales.
