Big Bluestem is a clump forming prairie grass native to Ohio. The foliage changes color from bluish green in summer to a reddish bronze in the fall. Tolerates a wide variety of soil types and is very drought tolerant once established. A top choice for naturalistic plantings. Grow on the lean side to prevent flopping. Provides shelter and food for songbirds. Host plant for several skippers. May self-seed. 5 - 7'
Yearly Care Instructions- Cut back old stems in late winter; fertilize sparingly and divide if clumps become too large.
Trimming Instructions- Cut back to the ground in late winter to rejuvenate.
Fertilization Instructions- Apply a low-rate, balanced fertilizer (e.g., 14-14-14) once in spring; low feeding need. Excess fertilizer in clay soil can cause weak growth.
